  • Libertarian News Week in Review for the Week of January 30th, 2009

All the Libertarian News you can use for the week of January 30th, 2009.

Starting off the week was an interesting article about Peter Schiff coming from Mish's Global Economic Analysis. Mish investigates Peter Schiff's record and double-checks his predictions. Great data. I think Peter does a great job being one of the only people on mainstream financial media that points out the fallacies of Fed policy and limitless Government intervention in the financial markets. He can be a little grandiose at times though.

If you didn't catch it this week, the "peace-candidate" used missile-drones to target supposed terrorist strong-holds on the Afghan border, killing many innocent civilians. Pakistani authorities have alerted U.S officials of their "great concern." Not bad for O-bomb-a's first week. What really irks me is why anyone would expect less.

From the astonished-head-smacking-department comes a story from South Carolina about profanity banning. Seriously? Yes, its true! Senator Robert Ford is hoping to outlaw "bad" language. Under the bill, you could be thrown in jail for five years or slapped with $5,000 in fines for using profanity. Do you think they will make special provisions for sailors?

As the UK continues its decline (or ascent?) into Orwellian utopia, a new report released by Centre for Economics and Business Research and published by the Times, concludes that some areas of Britain are so dependent on Government spending that the private sector is generating less than one-third of the regional economy. If this wasn't bad enough, British ministers are already considering paying firms to cut hours in order to halt lay-offs. The three day work-week returns.

I recently heard about an Agorist themed music tour, billing itself as "The Civil Disobedience Tour." Concentrating on the southern parts of the US, the bands are usingFacebook to line up shows. Get all the info at: Brad Spangler's site.

If you didn't already know, the big news this week was the passage of Obama's stimulus package. In total, $819 Billion will be used on various Government make-work projects and give about $500 dollars out to each individual, or $1000 to families. I'm sure this is the kind of change everyone had in mind when they pulled the lever for this guy.

I'll end this week on a positive note. Do you know what the Baltic Dry Index is? Its a measurement major raw materials moved by sea. Over the last three months, its up 34%. Some are speculating that this may be the catalyst of recovery.

    Yours in Liberty.
