  • Libertarian News Week in Review for May 8th, 2009!

All the Libertarian news you can use for the week of May 8th, 2009!

After a brief hiatus (I seemed to be busy every Friday for the last few weeks), I'm back! Did you miss me? I missed you.

Starting off the week was an interesting ABC News/Washington Post national survey that showed for the first time more Americans support gay marriage than oppose it. I wonder what the survey would have found if they had asked whether Government should be in involved in marriage at all? I can just hear it now: "but we NEED marriage licenses!"

For those of you who still have "hope" in the Libertarian Party (US), this recent quote may or may not shock you:

The government should use its rightful authority over the border to control entry into our country of foreign nationals who pose a threat to our health by spreading the virus into areas where it does not exist.
    —Donny Ferguson
    Libertarian National Committee
    Communications Director

Basically, the LP has taken the standard GOP line on these issues. Its a real shame. By contrast, check out this interview with David Nolan, who founded the LP in the early 1970's.

I found this list from cracked.com on the 5 most popular safety laws that don't work. In a nutshell:

    5. Speed Limits
    4. Three Strikes Laws
    3. The Amber Alert
    2. Sex Offender Registry
    1. Zero Tolerance School Policies

This week in no-knock police raids sends us to Baltimore. The police raided the wrong house, and after refusing to repair the victims door, they ended up fining him $50 after a city-inspector spotted the door in the victims backyard. This is after the victim pleaded with the city to remove the door. I don't know about you, but I sure feel safer knowing that the men & woman in blue are protecting us from evil-doers such as this gentleman.

Good news for those who lost their jobs in Boston. You can now get a free car! Courtesy of the city-government and tax payers of course. This sounds like a great way to use tax money. Thanks guv!

A recent US military strike in Farah Province, Afghanistan had lead to angry protesters marching in the streets and damaging Government buildings as the death toll reaches 100, according to local police. The Obama Administration responds: it regrets the civilian deaths, but denies any direct civilian deaths. I wonder if this is the change the people who voted for Obama were hoping for?

In civil disobedience news, a hunger strike has started at the Port Isabel Processing Center in Texas. The hunger strike is to protest and draw attention to extended detention and due-process rights violations. 50-100 people are reportedly participating in the strike.

In other civil disobedience news, a bar owner in Sandusky, Ohio recently lit-up a cigarette at the county health department to protest a newly passed anti-smoking law. The response from local Government goon-squads is a written-warning and a $100, increasing up to $2,500 after subsequent warnings. My hat is off to you sir!

To conclude this week, I'd like to point out that Nancy Pelosi was briefed in 2002 about the use of torture during interrogations and weak demand for US Treasuries forced the Treasury to pay higher interest than normal. Translation: investors have lost confidence in US Treasury bonds.

Lastly, check out the only known recording of H.L Mencken recently released by Lew Rockwell.
