All the Libertarian News you can use for the week of February 13th, 2009
For those not keeping track at home, the massive bailout packages over the last couple of years (including the stimulus) have hit the staggering amount of $9.7 trillion. Rest assured! The effects of all this money creation won't be fully realized for years. Why do now what you can put off until tomorrow (or on your children)?
A great graph published by the Washington Post this week breaks down Obama's $819 billion stimulus package into a very nice graphic which is easy to digest. With all that pork, you could probably feed the country for a month.
Steve Horwitz over at The Austrian Economists has launched a monthly podcast on economic issues. The first one has been released and is entitled "Why Do Things Cost So Much?"
As if giving the finger to his "Change" marketing campaign, on Monday Obama signed an executive order ordering all stimulus project labor to be union-only. Ah, a nice little payback for all the hard work those union leaders did in rallying the votes for Obama.
Surprise surprise, the Senate passed the stimulus package on Tuesday morning. On the news, the DOW promptly dropped 4.7% and the S&P 500 contracted 5%. So much for stimulus eh?
The Drudge Report is reporting today that Senator Gregg has given up his cabinet position as Secretary of Commerce, citing policy conflicts among others as the reason.
On Wednesday, Reason magazine gathered 10 leading economists to comment on the stimulus for a piece called The Reason.com Stimulus Symposium. The usual suspects like Robert Higgs make an appearance. However, I was disappointed to find no one on the list from The Mises Institute. Then again, I know there's a bit of a feud between those at the helm of Reason and The Mises Institute. I seriously doubt that's the real reason for the absence of Mises scholars though.
Set your Tivos! PBS is going to air a documentary on the financial crisis called "Inside The Meltdown." You can get show times and watch a preview over at the Frontline site.
A very interesting poll from Rasmussen (1,000 participants) has shown that the majority of people favor less Government! They also conclude that the majority of people polled think Government spending hurts the economy more than helps. This seems odd to me when looking at who people voted for during the primaries. All I can really say is, good job to those who answered this poll. This news gives me a bit more hope.
Posted over at Taki's Mag, an old poll from Pew Research has turned up some interesting demographics on those self-identifying as Libertarians. If you guessed that Libertarians were white, secular young males, you'd be right!
On that lighter note, we'll conclude The Weekly Minute for this week. As always, let me know what you think!
